This morning, at the crack of dawn, four dedicated volunteers gathered at 6 AM at the intersection of 16th Street and Indian School to embark on our mission of community service and environmental stewardship. With snacks and informative literature about heat relief in our pockets, we set out along the south side of the canal to engage with those in need while beautifying our neighborhood.
Over the course of approximately two hours, we made a significant impact by collecting at least nine trash bags filled with litter. Along our route, we stumbled upon a considerable dump site, which we managed to clean up by organizing everything into two neat areas. Although we eventually had to call it quits due to the rising temperatures, our efforts contributed to a cleaner and more sustainable environment for everyone in the community.
In addition to our clean-up efforts, two of our volunteers recently met with representatives from various city departments to discuss how we can better serve our community and enhance our experiences. We had a productive meeting with Rebecca from the Streets Department, who shared insightful updates regarding our street sign installation. The city has approved our sign, and it should be up within the next month, despite some initial confusion about canal ownership and the permitting process involving SRP (Salt River Project).
It was reassuring to learn that the city conducts regular maintenance of the canal, but even more encouraging to hear that our additional efforts are not only welcomed but deemed crucial. We found out that SRP has employed paid, armed security to ensure the safety of the area and to address any camping activities along the canal. This brings to light the importance of our work and the support needed for those facing housing challenges.
During our discussions, we explored options for distributing resources as we work. We were encouraged to hand out pamphlets containing information about local heat relief shelters. Additionally, the city provided us with a wealth of literature to hang, read, and distribute. It’s truly impressive to see the array of resources that the city of Phoenix offers its residents, including valuable programs like Housing Rehabilitation and the Love Your Block Grant Programs. If you’re involved with your local Phoenix neighborhood association but haven’t yet tapped into these resources, we highly recommend checking them out!
Overall, it was a fantastic day of cleaning and connecting with our community. The positive energy surrounding our efforts has been palpable throughout the year, and we’re grateful for all our wonderful volunteers who help make our world a cleaner and happier place.
